I spent the last month directing and counseling 22 Los Angeles based artists for our second annual Joint Custody Project. All of that is about to pay off. The show opens tomorrow, July 5, right here in Silverlake. PS. Happy Fourth.

My Interview with LA Taco

LA Taco

Over the weekend, I had the privilege of sitting down with Frankie from LA Taco, one of LA’s cleverest art and lifestyle zines, to chat about our latest show at Found. Highlights from the chat include a sneak peek into our marketing strategy in a city dominated by endless noise, why Los Angeles was finally ready for a show that has been around since 1976, and details about what’s next for your favorite east side gallery. Read the full interview for more.

Update: Taco appears to be down. Smiling Spider has mirrored the full text.

Excerpt from a list of code names, compiled by Trevor Paglen, from classified U.S. military programs active between 2001 and 2007. Personally I would like to know what plural hemp, salty gecko, and salty nation are all about. The Comptroller of the Department of Defense publishes an annual report that has all kind of juicy details like these buried deep within it.

This might actually be the solution to the energy crisis. Other solutions I’ve dreamt up: steam engines, and wind-up cars.

Drew and I are proud to announce the soft-launch of our newest brain-child – HopShare. Over the course of the next year, HopShare will bring community grown hops, and opensource brewing, to Southern California and beyond. Stay tuned for the launch of our website in the coming weeks. In the meantime, stay up-to-date on the first hop crop at HopFarm (in a brew near you this fall), as well as our other efforts, over at the HopShare Blog.

Three of the sixteen images Princess Margaret wasn’t allowed to see in 1976. From Irene Kai’s What Do You See? at Found through the end of the month.
UPDATE: This ended up on BoingBoing today - which means that our server crashed, which means that you will have to content yourself with viewing the images on Found’s Flickr feed, and not on our website. Sorry folks.

Is Apple Taking Over the World?

Is Apple taking over the world?

Steve Jobs, seen this morning at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, displayed this rather maniacal image in front of the audience at Moscone. I’ll let you decide what it really means. In other news, Apple finally released a 3G iPhone (with GPS) – for the low price of $199. Is there a connection?

I’ll admit it – I like wine. Ever since I bought my Molo Floats last month, I have been hyper aware of what I pour my fermented grape juice into. Practical they are not, but you have to give it to Kacper Hamilton for boldly reinventing one of human kinds’ most important drinking vessels – the wine glass.  The piece above is called Wrath - one of seven in a series inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins.
